Cambodians are very superstitious. They believe in spirits and supernatural powers. Young children with caged songbirds offer visitors the chance to set them free. For a few riel the children will open the cages which is said to bring luck and earn the liberator merit which can be used in next reincarnation. White teeth used to be considered bad luck in Cambodia. Teeth were thus ornamented with gold, silver and gems or stained red with betel nut.
